Northern Ontario Plant DatabaseNorthern Ontario Vegetation Type (V-type)Summary: A pine stand dominated by red pine, with white and jack pine, poplars, and white birch occurring less frequently. All of the subcanopy species, a variety of hardwood and conifer species, occur with less than 50% frequency. The regeneration layer consistently includes balsam fir, white pine, red maple, white birch, black and white spruce, but lacks red and jack pine. The shrub layer is dominated by low shrubs, including blueberries and bush honeysuckle, and significant amounts of beaked hazel. Willows and Canada fly honeysuckle are present, but occur with only 30-50% frequency. The herb layer is dominated by dwarf shrubs, mainly twinflower and wintergreen, as well as all the characteristic boreal forest species, plus wild sarsaparilla, largeleaf aster, and bracken fern. Schreber's feathermoss is common on the forest floor, but wavyleaf dicranum may also be present. This vegetation type is similar to C-V29 and C-V31, however, C-V30 is characterized by the presence of jack pine, black spruce, twinflower, and willows, but lacks mountain rice grass. Soil & Ecosite Types: The Red Pine-White Pine-Jack Pine Vegetation Type (C-V30) occurs most commonly on shallow mineral soils (SS3) and dry to moderately fresh, fine sandy soils (S2), but may occasionally be found on slightly moister soils. This vegetation type was described from Site Regions 4E and 5E, mainly from Site Districts 4E-4 (northern North Bay region) and 5E-10 (northern Algonquin Park area). Like C-V29 and C-V31, this vegetation type can be found on ecosite types C-ES 11.1 (White Pine-Red Pine, dry to moderately fresh), C-ES 11.2 (White Pine-Red Pine, fresh to moist), C-ES 12.1 (Red Pine, dry to moderately fresh), and C-ES 21.2 (Red Pine, fresh to moist). Note: In sample plots, species listed below occurred with 50% frequency or more, except for those in square brackets, which occurred with 30-49% frequency.
