Northern Ontario Vegetation Type (V-type)

C-V38: White Cedar - Goldthread - Sphagnum

Summary: A wet conifer stand dominated by white cedar, with white birch, black spruce, and yellow birch occurring with less than 50% frequency. These species also occur in the subcanopy and regeneration layers with varying frequencies, along with balsam fir. Red maple and black ash are also present in the regeneration. The shrub layer is rather diverse, with a variety of tall and low shrubs. Mountain maple, speckled alder, and Canada fly honeysuckle occur with the most frequency.

The herb layer is dominated by dwarf shrubs, such as twinflower, creeping snowberry, and dwarf raspberry, boreal forest species, and a wide variety of pteridophytes, including lady fern, oak fern, spinulose woodfern, northern beech fern, bristly or interrupted clubmoss, and woodland horsetail. The forest floor has discontinuous patches of Schreber's feathermoss, Sphagnum mosses, and three-lobed leafy liverwort.

This vegetation type is similar to C-V37, however, C-V38 occurs on slightly wetter sites, is characterized by the dominance of white cedar in the overstorey, and contains a much richer variety of pteridophytes in the herb layer, including ferns, clubmosses, and horsetails.

Soil & Ecosite Types: The White Cedar-Goldthread-Sphagnum Vegetation Type (C-V38) occurs most commonly on wet, deep organic, mesic (S20) and deep organic, humic (S21) soils, but may occasionally be found on slightly drier soil types. This vegetation type was described from Site Regions 4E and 5E, mainly from Site Districts 4E-3 (northern Sudbury region) and 5E-10 (northern Algonquin Park area). Vegetation type C-V38 is found primarily on White Cedar-Conifer ecosite types, including C-ES 33 (White Cedar-Other Conifer, very moist to wet), C-ES 22 (White Cedar-Other Conifer, dry to moist), and C-ES 32 (White Cedar-Black Spruce-Tamarack, very moist to wet).

Note: In sample plots, species listed below occurred with 50% frequency or more, except for those in square brackets, which occurred with 30-49% frequency.
