This gallery of excellent lichen images, the best online resource for lichen images, is from the Lichen Herbarium, Botanical Museum, University of Oslo, Norway. Lichenland
An interesting and very useful site on lichens compiled by researchers at Oregon State University. Illustrated interactive keys help to teach about the unique characters of lichens, which are formed by a symbiotic association between two unrelated species - one a fungus, the other either an alga or a cyanobacterium.

Lichens of North America
A website about the definitive lichen book for our area, Lichens of North America (I.M. Brodo et al. 1991), which includes photographs and distribution maps for each species, as well as keys and species descriptions. Every serious botanist should have a copy of this book in their library. The website contains a sample of the magnificent lichen photographs taken by Sylvia & Stephen Sharnoff, as well as sections on Lichen Biology and the Environment, Lichens and Wildlife, and Lichens and People.
Tom Volk's Fungi
An excellent website on fungi and lichens by Tom Volk, featuring a "Fungus of the Month," which answers such questions as why we think Christmas reindeers should fly, how ergot is related to the Salem Witch Trials, and how fungi have sex. This is an indispensable website for any students taking a course in lower plants.
Wisconsin Lichens
A website from the Wisconsin State Herbarium, University of Wisconsin-Madison with nomenclatural information and distributions of the lichen species of Wisconsin. Access the species from the List of Genera.
