Rare Plants
COSEWIC
COSEWIC stands for the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. This bilingual site by the Government of Canada describes the process by which a plant or animal is determined to be a species-at-risk. Browse through this website to learn more about Canada's endangered, threatened, or special interest species.
NHIC (Natural Heritage Information Centre)
The Natural Heritage Information Centre (NHIC) is the branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources that tracks rare and endangered species (both plant and animal) within Ontario. The NHIC newsletters contain excellent accounts of botanical exploration conducted by the NHIC staff throughout the less-explored reaches of our Province.
Ojibway's Species at Risk
A list of Provincially rare plant and animal species from the Ojibway prairie complex in the Windsor and LaSalle area. A few names have links to images, a website from the Ojibway Nature Centre in Windsor, ON.
Ontario's Species at Risk – by Region
A new format by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR), which lists the number of species at risk (SAR) for each County/District of Ontario. To access information on each SAR, select a region, then click on the line that displays how may SAR are known from that region.
Ontario's Species at Risk – by Species
This new format for the ON Species at Risk website includes all species, both plant and animal, in one list. If you know the name of the plant you’re searching for, it will be quicker to enter the name in the search field rather than scrolling through the complete species list. Distribution maps and very little identifying information is provided for each species.
Species at Risk Public Registry
A website (in English or French) from Environment Canada that discusses questions and problems associated with Canada's endangered species. Information on individual species (plant and animal) as well as legislation governing species at risk can be accessed through this website.
