A Synonymized Checklist of the Vascular Flora of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands

A list of vascular plants in the U.S., published by John Kartesz in 1998, with distribution maps by state. Information can be accessed by browsing or searches.


Bioimages (US)

A website hosted by Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, that includes excellent information on the plants and animals of the southeastern US, with a focus on middle Tennessee. This website contains separate access pages to webpages on trees and woody plants, non-seed plants, herbaceous plants, invasive plants, and various habitats.


BONAP (The Biota of North America Program)

This website includes information on the expanded Biota of North American Program, by John Kartesz, University of North Carolina. Included are county-level distribution maps for species in the U.S. Unfortunately for Canadian botanists, County-level or District-level data on vascular plant distribution is not widely available, but this resources is still extremely useful to get a better understanding of our North American flora.


East Coast Native Azaleas

The Middle Atlantic Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society has compiled a series of beautiful webpages on the azaleas, all members of the genus Rhododendron, native to eastern North America. Many of these species are now grown as cultivated shrubs.


Federal Noxious Weed Disseminules of the U.S.

A useful website by Julia Schur, APHIS (USDA), with descriptive pages and images of seeds of species classified as noxious weeds in the U.S. Select the Fact Sheets link to access the list of noxious weed species.


Fire Effects Information System (FEIS)

A very useful website with information on the fire ecology and effects of fire on both plant and animal species. To access the ecological information on forest species, click on the species acronym in front of each name in the Species Reviewspage.


Friends of the Wild Flower Garden

Formerly known as "Friends of the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden", this fabulous website features some of the best webpages on wildflowers of the north-central US, most of which are also found in Canada. Access the wildflower webpages from the Photo Gallery link. Excellent descriptive information and several clear images of each species are featured on each page. If you live in the Minneapolis area, you will definitely want to visit these gardens.


Invasive and Exotic Plants in the U.S.

A good source for information and images of invasive & exotic species in the United States. A joint project of The University of Georgia's Bugwood Network, the USDA Forest Service, and the USDA APHIS PPQ. This website now includes links to the , Federal Noxious Weeds, and State Noxious Weeds webpages.


Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center – Native Plants Database

The mission of the Wildflower Center is to inspire conservation of native plants. To find a species description or image, enter a common or scientific name in the dialogue box, or select a plant family from the list directly below the dialogue box, then hit "Search" to get links to the appropriate species. There is also a useful Special Collections page from which you can browse by State, species with value to beneficial insects, or a number of other interesting options.


National Invasive Species Information Centre - Plants

An informative website from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that features profiles on many plant species that are, or have the potential to become, invasive in Canada.

PLANTS Database

The PLANTS database is a comprehensive website from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. It includes taxonomic information and county-level distribution maps for all species found in the United States. New photographs and images from Britton and Brown's 1913 classic book, An Illustrated Flora of the Northern United States and Canada, have added to the value of this website.


Plants of the Northeastern United States

This website by Michael Hough features his terrific photographs of the native flora of New York State and the surrounding states. Access the webpages from this alphabetical species list or by flower colour. Note that each webpage contains several images, which can be viewed by clicking the Forward or Back links.


Smithsonian Institute's Department of Botany Collection

An extensive library (digital image and illustrations) of 15,000 plant species for non-commercial public use is provided by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. And of interest to botanical researchers is the Botanical Type Register, also accessible on this website.


Southeastern Flora

An extremely useful and attractive collection of images by John R. Gwaltney of the flora of the southeastern regions of the U.S. Also included is a simple interactive way to help identify unknowns.


Southern Appalachian Wildflowers

A great collection of absolutely stunning wildflower images by Rich Stevenson. Once you see his pictures of Oconee bells and yellow fringed orchid, you'll want to see them all!

Alaska Native Plant Society

The Alaska Native Plant Society offers seasonal wildflower walk, while members and volunteers participate in weed-pulls to control invasive species in their State. This website offers a number of links to other organizations and websites of interest to viewers.


Alaska Wildflowers and Shrubs

An image collection of Alaskan flowering plants and shrubs by Matt Goff. Visit Matt's home page to access his Hiking Journal and Photo Journal, packed with bird, whale, and landscape images from the Sitka region of Alaska. His website on Sitka Nature also provides great images from southern Alaska.


Alaska Wildflowers.us

This website features digital images of over 300 species of plants and fungi from the area of Central Alaska. Click on a thumbnail image to access the selected species page, which incudes several images of each plant, each with a useful caption.


Alaskan Plant and Animal Field Guides

A number of excellent resources can be found on this website, offered by the Alaska Centre for Conservation Science, from the University of Alaska at Anchorage, AK. Among other gems, you can download a PDF copy of the entire historically important 724 page book Anderson's Flora of Alaska, updated by Stan L. Toolik-Arctic Geobotanical Atlas

This interesting website, from the Institute of Arctic Biology at the Univ. of Alaska Fairbanks, features a collection of geobotanical maps, along with images of arctic vegetation types and plant communities.

Connecticut’s Invasive Aquatic and Wetland Plants

This PDF file provide well organized and attractive information sheets to 22 invasive species. A key to the species is provided, as well as information on how to differentiate between similar species, and what to do if you encounter one of these species in Connecticut lakes. The University of Florida's Centre for Aquatic and Invasive Species presents this website of aquatic and invasive species in Florida. Many of the webpages include excellent images and line drawings of Florida’s aquatic and invasive plant flora, some of which may be found in our area. Select from the link to species lists of emergent, submergent, or free-floating aquatic plants.


Atlas of Florida Plants

An excellent website compiled by Richard Wunderlin of the Institute for Systematic Botany (ISB), University of South Florida. Viewers can search for herbarium specimens or browse the species list by Scientific Name or Common Name.


Georgia

The University of Georgia Herbarium

This website is under construction, but previously included a collection of wildflower image, organized by scientific name or family. At least 4 new images collections are planned, including Georgia Wildflowers and Poisonous Plants of Georgia, so watch for these pages if you're interested in the Flora of Georgia.


Wildflowers on the Trail

Twenty three pages of wildflower images from trails in the Southern Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains are presented in this website by Tony Presley. Most images are from Georgia or North Carolina. This website also includes images of 22 Appalachian hiking trails.


Hawaii

Flowering Vascular Plant Families

This website on the vascular plants of Hawaii, by Dr. Gerald D. Carr, Univ. of Hawaii, provides links to excellent photographs of the Hawaiian flora. Families are organized according to the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG) Classification, with families listed alphabetically under the appropriate Order. GoBotany

If you know nothing about plant identification and want to start from scratch, this is the website to use. But if you're familiar with plant names, it's much easier to use the "Search" dialogue box at the top of the homepage to find a plant. Terminology used is also very basic, best suited for amateur botanist, but the images are a great help in confirming a plant ID. A website from the New England Wildflower Society.


Harvard University Herbaria (HUH)

The combined herbaria at Harvard University house over 5 million specimens! The homepage link provided here provides access to a variety of resources indispensable to professional botanists, but also to sites of more general interest, such as the detailed botanical illustrations of Sydenham S. Edwards, from Curtis's Botanical Magazine, published from 1787-1807.


Michigan

Michigan Ferns

A very useful website with excellent digital images of ferns in Michigan. A companion website to Charles Peirce's Michigan Wildflowers. Most of the images are habit shots, which will assist in field identification. All of the species featured in this website are also found in northern Ontario.


Michigan Flora

A useful website that provides good basic information, primarily related to habitat, on native plants in Michigan. Each species pages has a distribution dot map of Michigan counties and one image. Select the 'All Images' link under each photograph to access additional images.


Michigan Wildflowers

A very useful website with excellent digital images of Michigan wildflowers by Charles and Diane Pierce, which will greatly assist in field identification. Many of the species featured in this website are also found in northern Ontario.


Upper Peninsula Tree Identification Key

Common Trees of the Pacific Northwest

A very useful website on trees of North America's northwest coast. Linked to the list of genera is a description of each genus, plus a list of local native species. The descriptions are brief, non-technical, and include several images and a range map for each species.

Landscape Plants - Oregon State University

An updated website of images of cultivated trees and shrubs, plus images of many herbaceous ornamentals. Images of plant habit, flower, fruit, leaf, bark, and twig details are provided, as well as descriptions and basic horticultural information. A great reference for gardeners.


Lichenland

An interesting and very useful site on lichens compiled by researchers at Oregon State University. Illustrated interactive keys help to teach about the unique characters of lichens, which are formed by a symbiotic association between two unrelated species - one a fungus, the other either an alga or a cyanobacterium.


Oregon Flora Image Project

South Carolina

South Carolina Plant Atlas

Primarily an atlas of county-based distribution maps, but often providing links to images of the species. Access to the species is alphabetical by scientific name. A website from A.C. Moore Herbarium, University of South Carolina. From the left column of the website, be sure the check out other webpages on botanical topics such as poison ivy and mystery plant images.


Tennessee

Bioimages (US)

A website hosted by Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, that includes excellent information on the plants and animals of the southeastern US, with a focus on middle Tennessee. This website contains separate access pages to webpages on trees and woody plants, non-seed plants, herbaceous plants, invasive plants, and various habitats.


Identifying Invasive Plants of Middle Tennessee

A webpage on a few species considered to be invasive in middle Tennessee, and some of which also occur in northern Ontario. This webpage is part of the Bioimages website, hosted by Vanderbilt Univ.


Tennessee Wildflowers

This unique website feature images of wildflowers from regional hikes, organized according to blooming time, which can assist visitors to Tennessee who wish to find or photograph a particular flowering species.

Image Archive of Central Texas Plants

This image collection is part of the course website for the Native Plants of Central Texas course (Bio 406D) at the University of Texas at Austin. Very nice images and notes on diagnostic traits are included.


Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center – Native Plants Database

The mission of the Wildflower Center is to inspire conservation of native plants. The factsheets page of the Dendrology website from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA, links to identification sheets on over 800 species of trees. In The Garden of Paghat the Ratgirl

An unusual name for an unusually delightful website that features excellent descriptions of cultivated species and many cultivars, photographed in their garden settings in Washington State. The home page provides a list of plant categories to browse, or access the species by scientific name.


Marion Ownbey Herbarium - Washington State University

This website includes links to various local flora checklists, including Kamiak Butte, Moscow Mountain, Smoot Hill, and Rose Creek, as well as an herbarium specimen database on 350,000 specimens.

A website of excellent images and descriptions of the 34 species (plus varieties) of orchids native to Washington State.

Washington State Noxious Weed Control Board

Wisconsin

Flora of Wisconsin

This excellent new resource from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI, provides links to descriptions and images of all species in Wisconsin, as well as links at the top of the website to other projects being conducted by University researchers. Browse the Flora of Wisconsin Image Collection by this species list. Botanists may be familiar with their previous website, which provides easy access to herbarium records at the Madison State Herbarium.


Gymnosperms of Northeastern Wisconsin

A great website with an interactive key that includes all of our northern Ontario conifers.


Cofrin Centre for Biodiversity

The Gary A. Fewless Herbarium at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, was named in honour of its emeritus curator, Gary Fewless, who compiled an impressive set of excellent websites on most aspects of botany in Wisconsin. Each webpages has the same easy-to-use design, with thumbnails of digital images and scans showing traits such as bark, buds, leaves, flowers, fruits, etc. Clicking on the thumbnails will link you to a larger version of the images. Not all pages contain descriptions yet, but those that do are written in a not-too-technical manner and include information on the range of the species. Access the various websites from the links about half-way down the homepage.


Invasive Plants of Northeastern Wisconsin

Another great collection of webpages from Gary Fewless, Cofrin Center for Biodiversity at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Text includes descriptions and information on the history of the introduction of these species into Wisconsin. Digital image feature habitats and diagnostic traits.


Online Virtual Flora of Wisconsin
